Prasthanatraya, comprising of ten principal Upanishads, Brahmasutra and Sri Bhagavadgita, is regarded as the foundation of Sanatana Dharma. Sri Adi Shankaracharya wrote commentaries on these three components of Prasthanatraya establishing the doctrine of Advaita and these are among the earliest commentaries available. Thus they are of immense interest for anyone interested in the study of Sanatana Dharma.
Sri Shankaracharya’s commentaries are written in a logically compelling manner providing pramanas for establishing Advaita as the essence of Vedanta. They contain numerous references to Sruti, Smriti & Puranas and extensive cross references among themselves. An ideal way to showcase these commentaries incorporating such multi dimensional aspects in today’s context is the digital medium: see advaitasharada.sringeri.net.
While a deep knowledge of Sanskrit is required for a proper study and understanding of this important corpus, if authoritative translations into various Bharatiya bhashas can be made available on the same lines, studying original bhashya along with these translations would enhance the learning experience leading to a deeper understanding of the original. As a first step in this direction, we are making available a Tamil translation of Prasthanatraya bhashya along with the corresponding original Sanskrit text.
